 Recipes for Potting Mixture

The best medium for succulents is a mix of two parts perlite, two parts topsoil, and one part
sharp sand.
Seeds
need a special
mix to begin germinating, one that provides just the right level of
moisture. This is one potting mix that
Martha Stewart
prefers to buy,
instead of make herself, mainly because it’s sterilized. It should
contain horticultural-grade spagnum peat, vermiculite, Osmocote, and
perlite.
When you take
cuttings from houseplants such as a violet, it’s a good idea to use a root
hormone to promote growth and a mix of equal parts perlite and sharp sand.
For all other uses,
including outdoor containers, keep an
all-purpose mix on hand. This mix
should comprise three parts peat, two parts perlite, two parts soil, one
part vermiculite, one part #3 coarse sand, 1/4 part charcoal, two large
handfuls of 14-14-14 Osmocote, 1/4 cup bonemeal, and 2 tablespoons
Dolomitic lime. Be sure to keep all your mixes covered in a plastic or
galvanized bin.
