The Hanky
Code is a traditional form of signaling to others what your sexual preferences
and interests are. Gay men used this code to communicate with each other in the
noisy and distracting environment of gay bars. Although not as widely used these
days, it is still a worthwhile resource and is, among those who know, a great
conversation starter.
     
Hankies are usually worn in either the
back left or right pockets, however, they can also be worn around the
wrist, or as an armband, around the ankle or leg at the thigh above the knee, or around the neck with
the knot/tie going either right or left. Other objects can also be used
such as keys and key chains or watch fobs and even a set of handcuffs
(Bondage), to let people know if you are 'top' or 'bottom'. Left =
Top/Active and Right = Bottom/Passive. If worn in the back on the
center belt loop, it translates as 'versatile'.
F.A.Q:
Question: Do you have to
memorize all the codes?
Answer: Absolutely not! The point
of it is to know the few things you like to do the best, and wear and seek
out the colors you like. This way if gays always wear their
preferences on their pockets or as wrist-cuffs, we could save time and
embarrassment from having to ask the dreadful questions, such as 'are you
a top or a bottom?' and 'what do you like to do in bed?' Focus on
those who match your taste, and move on along from any of the other
colors, because obviously they are not your favorites anyway. And
don't forget, you can always wear more than one hanky, too!
Question: How do you show
that you are already taken or not interested in anything?
Answer: Don't wear any hankies at all,
and be sure to wear a wedding band on your ring finger.
Question: Are there codes
for lesbians or straights?
Answer: Well, not really, but one could
adapt the gay ones! However, if you are a straight guy with a hanky
in your pocket, you may have gay guys trying to hook up with you, so it
would be best to wear the color on a hat or head-scarf bandanna.
Women could wear a hair bows as well. This way there is no
top-bottom as straight people already know their passive/aggressive
positions. Lesbians should be able to wear them like the gay guys
do, in pockets or on wrists or thighs or armbands.
There isn't really any color for HIV
positive either but many men who are positive show it in their jewelry
with plus-symbols (+) and red ribbons. Often they might tattoo those
symbols on one arm or the other. They could also get a hanky that
has ribbons printed on it. White with red AIDS ribbons. Or red
plus symbols... a positive top or a positive bottom depends on what
side as usual.
Bisexuals could wear the bisexual flag on
one side or the other as well. The bisexual flag is dark blue, dark
purple and maroon.
